Billy, the source in the M-K Collection is this recording of Franklin George (made by our friend "Yew Piney"): slippery-hill.com/content/twen...h-january
Frank George was not your typical old timer, but he said he learned it from someone from VA\NC who came to work with his father.
All the versions posted are derived from that, even that slightly mysterious crossover one.
Searching for a new cool tune...fiddle currently fcfc....while worrying about my old violin .... Luthier needed to go to an auction yesterday so cancelled the appointment. Same time the Belgian Post came with an excellent solution for lack of visa or paypal... Finally I can order over the ocean without any help phew. Bad news and good news here in other words ...
Life is like a fiddle bow... Can go up can go down and if you put too much tension on it it might start to bounce :-)
Yay found the coolest tune and so many good takes on it on YouTube: piney woods <3 And this way I stick to my plan ... Edit: cheating a bit with the annotation on The Traditional Tune Archive.... Gives me an idea of the notes involved...but still trying to pay more attention to the play by ear aspect.

More reason for yay! I got my old fiddle back, the neck problem is solved, the fiddle has been cleaned and got new Helicores with a titanium A string, and it now has a bridge that has made to fit. Very reasonable price for this work also.
So no new tunes but some hasty try out of the thing :
Playing with Liza Jane theme again:

Any cross tuning ? ......or all standard?
Many of the A tunes are cross, but I play them in standard. The other fiddle player plays them crossed.
Trying to learn this man's take on Bull at the Wagon, I so far only learned a basic version of this tune. What style is he playing? Can anyone telll me more on this player? He teaches also, I wonder if I could shop a couple of lessons with him in order to learn this tune version. I like it that much :-D Trying now to figure out the first part, it's fun!

Wow, this kid (young man?), and this tune:
youtube.com/watch?v=1dbkrVROGLY
F#B F#C# is a kick ass tuning! I am having this video on repeat, each now and then I slow down and try to figure out a phrase.
Beautiful!!

That kid seems to be studying Isham Monday's tunes, he's posted a bunch. Here's Isham playing it (possibly tuned even lower, I didn't check)
The Nancy Dawson I know is the traditional tune used in the Royal Navy from 1700's until July 31, 1970, to call the hands for their ration of grog. Totally different tune.
