Sounds good...it really sounds like the beginnings of Johnson Boys. Johnson Boys, raised in the ashes, didn't know how to court a young maid....turned their backs and hide their faces, sight of a purty girl made 'em afraid... Do you know that one?

Farmer Jones, nice fiddling...I think Red-Haired Boy is also called or similar to one called Little Beggar Man, ain't it? I always thought that was hard to play, myself. I have fumbled through it some but seems difficult. Cherokee Shuffle is a fun one. Nice playing, all around with 'em both.

Is that a photo of your fiddle sitting in a bucket of drywall paste?????

Thanks Peggy!

We have a farm store here called Bomgaars. That's a Bomgaars chore pale. I had to look twice. I did have a pickle bucket.

I like playing Fiddling Around, Windy City Rag, April’s Reel, The Silver Spire, Angel’s Waltz, Gardenia Waltz and Westphalia Waltz. I don’t play much but these are my favorites.

Old time player here........I have always played only in standard tuning and could never get some tunes to sound like the recordings that I heard.
Recently I bought a "second fiddle" and tuned it to sawmill; wow!... Happy Hollow ,among other A tunes, now sound like what I have been trying to do, and they are easier to play. Such fun. Thanks to this group for the idea to try something different.

28 Jan - Interesting tune name! So apparently nothing of great importance actually happened on that date? That’s what the internet seems to say…?

Just a short month. Should be titled "29th of January" a.k.a. "Leap Year" to make it something special.

Of course, there would be a tune called "Leap Year Reel."

Luckily we only have to play that reel only every few years...hahaha...

Hmm...so the news here is, I got invited to play in a short unpaid gig with my flute friend! For a Gaelic association. The bad news is, we will be out of town that week visiting our kids...so I can't participate...but it's also a relief since performing is scary to me anyway! Off the Hook, phew! :-D

Chickenman - Some confusion here. I'm quite sure January has 31 days. February is a short month, so if the tune were "28th of February" your comment might make sense but its not. Or am I missing something?

imapicker2 - I've heard the title "Happy Hollow" but don't know the tune, so I looked it up. It seems that Marcus Martin actually played that tune in AEac#. Maybe something new for you to explore.

Thanks Doug...
I have a list of tunes to try in that(Black Mt. Rag ?) tuning next, and I will add "Happy Hollow".

I did not want to mess with the standard tuning on my no.1 fiddle but I might put geared tuners on this new no.2 and play with half a dozen tunings.

>28th of January
AKA The 8th of January, commemorating Colonel Jackson's victory over the British on that date (2 weeks after a peace treaty had been signed).
Jimmy Driftwood composed words to the tune. which I can recite from memory because Johnny Horton's version used to get airplay on Top 40 radio well into the '60s and 70s.

JonD - If by "AKA" you mean they're the same tune, that's not so. Here's "28th of January" by the Fuzzy Mountain String Band: youtu.be/7aVj9DsM46U?feature=shared

Like ‘em all…amazing how differently it gets played…

…the last version has some kind of gigantic bodhran! I like the beginning a lot, when it’s just pure fiddle and bodhran…:-)

Ah yes! Fuzzy Mt. That's where I'd heard it. Walt and Claire play it in that same fashion, which likely comes from a source recording. Fun one I should commit to memory.
