This tune got cookin' in our jam at the Glendale, AZ Folk & Heritage Festival, March 2010. Amazing what a good bass and rhythm guitar will do for a tune. Key of D.

Here's a tune I learned from several of our jammers at the Tucson Old-Time Music Circle and got to try out with them at a great outdoor house jam in Casa Grande, AZ on November 21, 2009. Fiddlers include myself, Carolyn Camp, Martila Shirley, and John White. On guitar is Charlie White, and on the openback banjo, John Walkenbach (J-Walk). As you can tell, Sal got plenty muddy that day.

From a Tucson Old-Time Music Circle Jam, June 4, 2010. As is common with jam tunes, this one was a little slow getting off the ground, but eventually got there. Key of G.

Sometimes people get so wrapped up in a fun jam that they don't even hear (or care) what the others are playing. Here's a round of Soldier's Joy from the 2010 Glendale Folk & Heritage Festival, in which the jammers couldn't seem to agree on which part to play when. Fortunately, the chord structure of the two parts is close enough that it didn't really matter so much! We all had fun anyway.

Here's the Tucson Old-TIme Music Circle playing SAMATPAD up to speed. I think it's a fun catchy tune, especially with the two extra crooked beats punctuating each A part and every pair of B parts.

I braved it and asked the lady fiddlers at our local music circle if they'd indulge letting me try this tune with them very SLOWLY. They did, and one of them (Michelle) kindly plopped herself right at my feet to help me through the bowings. A great jamming experience.

My first attempt at learning a fiddle tune completely by ear, from a Jimmy Triplett workshop recording. Fiddle is tuned to GDGD. Excuse the newbie intonation problems...

A jamming first for me. My first tune at the Rincon Market old-time/Irish jam. Dan Levenson (fiddledan) taught me this pretty tune and helped hide some of my mistakes in the jam. But then he got sneaky and went down to the low harmony part. Well, you gotta start somewhere. AEAE tuning.

Carolyn Camp and me on fiddles, jamming at Carolyn's house. We sped up intentionally as we went along. Carolyn is the one who occasionally dropped down to the lower strings. The mistakes are all mine. The crash ending was due to my miscommunication to Carolyn. Cross A (AEAE) tuning.

Here's a quick and dirty (unfortunately) recording for an emergency TOTW entry. I'm playing my fiddle here against a recording of Willow Waltz performed by fiddler Dan Levenson (fiddledan) and Gary Hunt on guitar (Light of the Moon CD.1997). Key of G. Willow Waltz was composed by Michigan Fiddler Les Raber ca. 1929. (Sorry about the blown double-stops at the end...)

Led by fiddler Tom Carlson at a jam at the Glendale, AZ Folk & Heritage Festival March 20, 2010. Roger Cuthbertson on cittern, Jo Schubert on mandolin, lots of others. Great tune, great music, great fun!
