I'm a hardcore oldtime fiddler - see samples on youtube. How'd I get here? Dad wanted me to learn to play like his uncle in the mountains of Appalachia, so I was trotted off to a classically-trained musician for four years of instruction at an early age. That didn't quite get there. Picked it up again at age 30 and started by ear... after playing my first square dances I went back to college for a year of music study on the gi bill, so am familiar with violin-ship as well as fiddling. I've put over 20,000 hours of wear on my old "gypsy" fiddle (a guarnerius copy) since then. Mainly Appalachian, although if I'm alone for a 3 hour gig it will include folk songs, swing tunes, blues, Scandinavia, Mexican, etc. etc. Do an hour workshop at the NW Folklife Festival every year, "fiddle for violinists." Occasionally take students at my home in Monmouth, Oregon, and have had some pretty successful students.
