This is a terrific, 5-string fiddle-faddle (violin-viola) made by Martin Brunkalla of Marengo, Illinois. He took the basic design of Peter Tertis, former principle faddler for the London Philharmonic, and made it in a reasonable size for having a high E string, ending up with a string length (nut to bridge) of 14 inches, instead of the fiddle's 12.9 inches. That should be comfy for most fiddlers.

That is a very handsome instrument. Adding a high "E" to a faddle seems like an interesting approach to building a 5 string, rather than adding a "C" to a fiddle. - Carroll

Is this yours? If so How do you like it? Craig turned me on to this guy a year or so ago, and I talked to him on the phone, but that was about as far as it got.

Adding an E string to a faddle preserves the sonority needed for the lowest string. If its well made, there is no sacrifice of tone at the high end, but it will certainly have a darker tone.
Alas, only in my dreams would it be mine - WOOT! When finances allow I would love to commission one. If you go to www.brunkalla.com, you can find a link where a gal that purchased one plays it on a CD.
