Yup, because it took a while for the fiddle to migrate up to just under the chin, I reckon. Some fiddlers today still play it at the chest and never on the shoulder. Even Rachel Barton Pine can be seen on YouTube playing an English square (really rectangular) fiddle at the chest, not on the shoulder.
