playing in BEAE tuning

I stumbled on Art Stamper's Swing Lady Home in BEAE tuning. Far as I can find, that's the only old time tune in that tuning. I took my low string DOWN to B afraid it take it UP an octave; which way is it supposed to be?! Is this a common tuning in any other fiddle genres?
