I'm not much of a fiddle player, but love the instrument. I do play banjo, mandolin, guitar, and dobro, and could play back-up guitar to fiddle players all day and be happy. Around 1978 I entered a couple fiddle contests, and at the Santa Barbara (CA) Fiddle Contest I won the Henry David Thoreau Award for playing to a different beat. I then retired from competitive fiddling (or any musical competitions) but continued to play. I haven't played a fiddle on stage for 25 yars or so, but that doesn't mean it won't happen.
