The King of the 5 string banjo is gone. He was a benevolent King, not master and lord but teacher and guide. Anyone who starts to play a 5 string Banjo will hear a whispered voice within the strings singing "Long live the King."

I am new to the violin and enjoy Celtic type tunes. I play a little banjo and write tunes for banjo and violin/cello. I would say that I come closer to people like John Hartford on the banjo rather than Ralph Stanley. I love Tony Ellis tunes with the double C tuning as used by players like Steve Martin as well. I have two young children and live with them and my wife in Southwest, Va. I am an Actor and also a university part-time teacher. I sing in musical productions and in my church choir. There isn't a day that goes by where there isn't music playing in my house from classical to old time mountain to folk to jam band. My kids dance to tunes being played most Saturday mornings in the kitchen while I cook breakfast. We play a lot of Donna the Buffalo on those mornings.
