In my last entry I mentioned having gained some measure of control over bowing and that that enabled me to "watch" my left hand. On the guitar or banjo that would be real progress as the goal of the interemediate player is to get to the point where the right hand takes care of itself.
After playing a little more, however, I realized that watching the left on the fiddle is a waste of energy at best and self-defeating at worst. The violin has no frets, therefore there's nothing to watch.
Now my goal is to reach a point where the left hand pretty much takes care of itself. That requires listening carefully and making adjustments based on the note's sound, not location. So I'll focus my eyes on the bow and ears on the finger-board. That makes more sense I think.
