Port Orford Cedar and Yellow Cedar

Wednesday, September 30, 2015

I just finished a cello with a Yellow Cedar top - and how mellow it is. I have also used Port Orford Cedar in many instruments. Both these types of woods compare favorably to spruce and add a slightly different sound to the mix. Cedars are very easy to carve - you almost can't feel the grain under the plane. They carve like butter. Interestingly, I recently read that Alaskan Yellow Cedar is used to make totem poles as it is very durable and has natural rot and insect repellents.

I was born in 1944 and have spent my life trying to make it an art project, and now here I am at seventy, still "hard at it".
