Last week the dance band was out and about. It's where I learn the heaps and although there is nothing I like better than to play for dancing, i find it hard. The beat slips away, chasing it, dragging it, losing it, sometimes it just rolls and swings along just great and then suddenly I'm out again and flailing around. The dancers are great teachers, you can see how they feel your music through the body - pretty direct feedback. As a classical player in my past i wasn't exploring timing in music - you give the conductor your rhythmic soul - and timing is one of those things seems to take years and years to develop and work into your playing, but for some it seems to be just there. What's always frustrates me is how can it not be there. It should be there - it's our home - we have heartbeats, our breathing is rhythmic, so why is it so hard to get the music to drop into that place?

I live in Edinbugh, Scotland and work in music; part community musician, playing for dancing with my dance band, musical director of a folk choir in the city, running my own fiddle school on the island of Lismore - 'Lismore Fiddle Retreat'. Own and play an Otis Tomas fiddle and have ordered another one from him recently for my daughter. Exited. I had the great chance to play Otis's viola in his 'fiddletree' concert in Cape Breton, Celtic colours in October 2010. I also sing songs that my husband Dave Francis and I write. Recently putting together my own band to sing these songs is a new thing, but now I have an album to prove that I've really done it! Dave and I have duo called 'The Cast' and have made 3 albums to date. I think that's about it!
