There are times I listen to various fiddlers, and you can tell which ones play with their soul. I remember hearing Mark O'Connor playing "Amazing Grace"...the tone, the feel of the tune, it was being played with his heart and soul, yes the fingers were the vessel to get the song out....but it was the heart and soul of Mark that was being heard.
I've always tried to play where the audience can hear my heart and soul in each song/tune.
I guess playing by ear has made it easier to put my heart and soul in it all.
I'm thankful for the gifts God has given me to be able to put my heart and soul in everything I do.....whether playing music, or anything else in life.
