Baroque violas

Tuesday, March 1, 2011

Hi

I am making a copy of the Amati 1592 viola from John Pringle's drawing. The drawing seems to show the sides and top surface of the finger board as perfectly straight lines. On modern instruments these would of course be slightly 'dished'. Is it really necessary to include this dishing on such a very short necked, low angled Baroque fingerboard? Or am I safe in following the drawing literally? I'm not a viola player and can't judge this for myself  -  Can anyone advise?

I've just finished making a beautifully decorated fingerboard as per the drawing and am reluctant to have to throw it away unless I have to!
