Buying my first fiddle

 I live in Melbourne,Australia and want to learn how to play the fiddle. I'd appreciate some advice re what type of fiddle to buy - brands, materials, retail outlets etc. I want one that is good for a beginner but not too cheap. I'm thinking $1000,00 plus. Any other advice is much appreciated.
