After being nearly ruined for music for life by bad music teachers and bad lessons as a child, I have tried for the last 9-10 years since age 35 to find the right musical instrument to give me a lot of joy. Began with tinwhistle, then recorder, then clarinet, then alto sax. All of these I taught myself to play. Of those I liked alto sax best, but none of them felt really deeply RIGHT. Then on a lark I picked up the fiddle and began to teach myself to play it. This one at last feels like the RIGHT instrument for me, and I am enjoying it more than I've enjoyed any other instrument. I am doing some plucking on mandolin too, but I feel happiest with the sound and the feel of the fiddle. I am not a patient person so it isn't easy, but I have at least gotten to the point where I can play relatively simple tunes decently, which provides sufficient satisfaction to continue to learn.
