Well my fiddle playing is just not going anywhere at the moment. It just sits there in the case longing to be played.
I have been playing mandolin at an old time jam lately, as well as getting back togther with some friends I have playing with on and off for almost three years in a band. Last night we got on the discussion of taking on new instruments and how it leads to neglect of others. I play mandolin in the band, but also play guitar and am learning (slowly) to play fiddle and want to learn to play the whistle (and possibly banjo). We have a dobro/guitar/bass player, a guitar/mando/bass/tenor banjo player that is learning fiddle and hammered dulcimer, and we have a fiddle player that plays harmonica and fills in on bass from time to time. Add to that a guitar strumming vocalist and a bass playing vocalist, and you have our band - GreyGrass.
I am trying to balance focusing on my main instrument, mandolin, with learning to play fiddle. Since there is already a fiddle player in our band, and five to seven at the old time jam, it is hard to make myself dedicate time to learning one of the most expressive instruments around.

I have played guitar on and off for 20 years, play mandolin as my main instrument of choice these days (2 years) and just started playing fiddle. I am enjoying the challenge that the fiddle is presenting. I am currently working on Tennessee Waltz and Ashokan Farewell because they are slow enough that I can concentrate on my bowing and intonation.
