George started playing the banjo in 1978 after being inspired by banjo music on Vermont Public Television and Earl Scruggs. In 1981 he won first place in the Bluegrass division at the prestigious Craftsbury Banjo Contest. He also won second place with original material in 1983. During this time he began learning the pedal steel guitar and formed the New Cross Country Band. In 1985 his band won the New England division of the Wild Turkey Battle of Country Band sponsored by Austin Nichols Corporation. Winning the New England division won the band a trip to Nashville Tennessee to compete and record in the national contest where they placed third in the nation! The New Cross Country played to high acclaim appearing on Vermont Public Television's Guest of the House, opening for country music star George Jones. The band ended in 1995 and George played with several country music bands from New Hampshire until joining the rock band Second wind in 1997 and lasted until 2005 nowplaying with Ray Mardin with the pedal steel in Country Express. George is also in Rusty DeWees' band the Fellers. They recorded and released the Gold Diggers Beware CD in 2003 and he performed with the Logger's Variety Shows. Realizing a long time dream of focusing exclusively on play his beloved banjo George formed the Steel Rail bluegrass band in early 2004 and eagerly looks forward to playing bluegrass and the banjo for a long time to come!
