I attended a free introductory Music Together class this morning and it was awesome! I did not bring a child, which made it a little awkward, but I learned a lot about early childhood development.
Turns out handing a little kid a fiddle and trying to teach them how to play a song on it is a terrible idea. I had suspected as much, and was delighted to have it confirmed. Which isn't to say I will no longer teach little kids, just that from now on there will be much, much more singing! And egg shakers. And running, and jumping, and dancing.
When it is time for them to pick up their little fiddle, we will now be doing call and response with it- playing the whole song themselves is way too much pressure.
This is going to be so much more fun!!!

I started on classical violin as a kid, and was bitten by the Fiddle Bug about four years ago. Since then, I have played with Twisting Hay, Trashbin Troubadors, The Sidhe, and The Durty Nellys, and have sat in with Umbrella bed, Scullduggery, and Drunk and Disorderly playing anything from Irish to Gypsy to Blues to Country (although country is admittedly not my strong suit). My primary profession, however, is in repair and restoration. i have worked on 16th size suzuki violins to fine italian violins, and squire electric guitars to a beautiful gibson archtop that someone had smashed over it's owners head in a bar fight. I went to school at Redwing Technical, but most of the rest of my training was at Claire Givens Violins. My teaching career began mostly by accident, but people keep on inviting me to teach, and the students keep coming back for more, and I couldn't be happier. I currently teach at the Music-go-Round on Ford Pkwy, Groth Music, and from my home in South Minneapolis 6 days a week.
