Hope Grietzer is a fiddler from the Southern Tier of upstate New York. The 2009 inductee into the New York State Fiddlers’ Hall of Fame, Hope fell in love with fiddle music in college, playing for dances in the Geneseo String Band under the leadership of ethnomusicologist Jim Kimball. She studied with 1980 New York State Fiddlers’ Hall of Fame inductee Larry Downey while fiddling throughout New York State and Pennsylvania. After a move to Colorado, Hope sang and fiddled in bands throughout the Midwest for 13 years and was voted "Rocky Mountain Region Fiddler of the Year" by the Colorado Bluegrass Music Society. Living now in the lovely countryside of Owego, N.Y., Hope can be found fiddling at concerts and contradances across the state. She teaches fiddle both privately and in group lessons through Broome Community College, and is president of the local chapter of the New York State Old Time Fiddlers’ Association. With her husband Jim MacWilliams, Hope directs a monthly children’s fiddle tune program, passing on this joyful tradition to the next generation.
