Welcome to the UK Fiddlers group

From TopCat on 2/1/2011 4:22:27 AM

Hi everybody, I'm just a beginner myself, but I thought that as no-one had started a UK group yet, I might as well do it. It should be useful as a place to link content about fiddle-related gigs, sessions, teachers etc on this side of the pond.

I forgot to say - feel free to link to relevant blog posts, pics or videos already hosted on FHO (I think that's how it works).

Fine idea for a group, TopCat! Howdy to all you UK fiddlers out there, and might I just remind any of you in London that the Blue Lion jam session is tomorrow night, that's Wednesday 2nd February, at the Blue Lion, 133 Gray's Inn Road. All welcome! Meeting from 7pm and pickin' around 8.

Not many fiddlers around here, are there? I started playing about a year ago because I couldn't get anyone for an Old Time Band I was in.

Great idea! I'm a complete beginner, still struggling to get anywhere at all - mainly due to lack of spare time, Still, it'll get easier in a few years when I retire. (some hope!)

Hi there!

I'm a Scottish man living in Southampton, England. I've been playing violin for many years, in various styles - classical, Irish trad, bluegrass, snazz etc. I have some of my own compositions and tuition videos here on YouTube :

Hey everybody,
Thanks for joining in!
Ged - have you tried posting on the UK Bluegrass forum for your band?
Mark - I thought the Toon was a bit of a hotbed of fiddling, what with the Folk degree at the Uni and Sage Folkworks?

Mark Pierce says:

Hmmmm. The access to the Sage goodies is a bit limited by its cost and slight air of preciousness. I'm not a big fan of the Tickells and Unthanks etc. There is a good Bluegrass scene, but I'm more Old Time. There is a session, but I've yet to access it. A few people have taken up the fiddle in my circle since I did, which is good. What I need is a good teacher who has heard of Ed Haley...

Mark, I`ve been taking fiddle lessons for the last year. Every Wednesday at Byker City Farm. The teacher is Emily Ball and she`s wonderful. There`s also The Tyneside Fiddle Alliance. They meet twice a month at St Marys Church next to The Sage led by Stewart Hardy, Sophie Ball and Hinny Pawsey. I`ve been going to The Sage since it opened and its great fun. Carly Blane`s class is mostly fiddles and she`s fantastic. I spent two years in her class ( playing banjo ) and we learnt some great tunes. Last year they played Blackberry Blossom, Wildwood Flower, Red Haired Boy, Soldiers Joy and Lisa Jane.
At the end of April they have the Fiddles On Fire Weekend with three days of concerts and workshops. You might like Jock Tyldsey`s workshop. He`s doing Old Time Fiddle. Each workshop costs 8. I`m thinking of doing it myself.

Sandra: Thanks for the heads up. I'll try and find out more about the Tyneside Fiddle Alliance. Essentially I want to learn Old Time Fiddle, so this info is great. I learnt guitar with Jim Newman, who got me into Old Time. I've just started trying to form a band again with my friend Sue on Mandolin and me on Guitar/Fiddle. We're playing songs like Milwaukee Blues, Cold Rain and Snow, Banks of the Ohio and Dreadful Wind and Rain alongside Old Joe Clark et al. We are amateurs, and the plan is to bring new people on board (esp. banjo/fiddle) as and when we meet people who share our focused but laid back approach! In the long run we may even perform in public! If you are interested - or know others who might be - we meet every fortnight in the N.Shields/W. Bay area and my email is mapierce59@hotmail.com.

Hi Mark, I`d love to but my husband would have a heart attack if I suggested it. Do you know Roly Lyons?. He was my first banjo teacher, and my last. I changed from bluegrass to clawhammer and still havn`t managed to find a clawhammer teacher.

Hi
Been playing on and off for a while...badly.
Taking it nice and slowly this time and doing a bit of disciplined practice instead of just playing the same tunes over.
Early days but it's going well. Using 'transcribe' on the pc to learn the tunes by ear and where all the chords are played.
Live in Brighton where there's a few good sessions.

Mark Pierce says:

@Sandra:

Yes I know of Roly Lyons. It is funny re Clawhammer - Jim never seems quite clear what I mean by that style - but it may be what he calls "frailing" style. I play a little in that style on the Ukulele!

Oh well, in the cause of avoiding heart attacks and marital disharmony my search for a banjo player for the band continues....

PS You might try Jim Newman - he's a good banjo/mando/guitar/uke player and teacher and probably could help you. He's based in New Hartley or thereabouts. He also runs monthly sessions where you can play along in a relaxed atmosphere - it's nearly all banjo players at least one of whom is female.

It sounds good Mark. Maybe I should learn to drive. Then I could drive myself to all of these things.

I'm still hoping for someone who could help me out of the "complete novice" band, but needs to be in the Northwest due to time constraints. Failing that, another complete novice so we can learn together?

TopCat says:

Hey Dave, I have lessons with Gina Le Faux but she's near Halifax so probably too far for you. Are you of more of a "folky" tendency? (rather than bluegrass/old time like me, I mean). How about gettiing in touch with Emma Sweeney in Manchester for lessons, she seems v nice and is reputedly a good teacher. Or is that still too far? Big bluegrass scene in Helsby near Frodsham with some excellent teachers...

Ive been playing for about 4 years. Im entering a school competition on the 28th open to all classical instruments. The Manchester camerata are coming and we get to work with them. Im really excited!
