Fiddlin' with Sam

From M-D on 2/6/2011 11:24:12 PM

A bunch of us got together to-day, and spent the afternoon playing what we all know and love -- traditional Ozark fiddle music.

Now, we do this on a regular basis, but to-day we managed to coax Sam out of the house to come and play with us.

I see Sam on a regular basis, 'bout weekly, but he mostly keeps to his self, and rarely ventures out to play with others.

So, the weather co-operated, I picked Sam up, and off we went to Sutter's house, deep in an Ozark holler. It's a mile of one-lane pig-trail getting there, winding through the forest, once leaving the main road.

Sutter is my guitar second, and we play together all the time, but Sam and Sutter were two of the orginal members of the Staff Band at the Ozark Folk Center, and the only two still surviving. We lost Ervin last year, though he'd been failing for many years.

So, I got to play for the third straight day in a row, with my usual group, but also got to play with my friends Judi and Sam.

It was a good day to be Martin to-day . . . and the traditional music of the Ozarks lives on still.

We got Sam out again yester-day. Had a really good time with him, as he did with us. He'd about quit playing, because there was no one to play with, so it's nice that he's getting out again. But, after 75 years of playing, it's not like he's forgotten how.
