Grandpa ws an old time Ozark fiddler

From Keith Coplin on 5/21/2012 10:57:02 PM

I  wonder if any one had ever heard of Harold Nations? An old Ozark fiddler born in 1881 at Cold water, Mo. Grand pa grew up in the wilds of Missouri the son of James W. Nations a Civil War Veteran and Millwright. Grandpa Harold as he is called by all family members worked the mill with his family and soon was working full time in the blacksmith shop there at Cold water. As most would know, folks back in the hills made their own music; learned to play what they could hear. Grandpas' dad was a fiddler and he soon took an interest and its said that it wasn't long before Grandpa was playing so well that his dad quit playing and Grandpa was asked to play at the local dances and such.

In 1925 Grandpa and Grandma left the backwoods and moved to Libertyville, Mo. There he continued to work in his blacksmith shop, coon hunt and play the fiddle. Being a fine player, he was usually on the road playing hoedowns and community activities for miles around. In 1959 shortly after he passed on, an article was written in the Lead Belt News as I recall, of his accomplishments. He was at that time considered a Missouri Regional Champion. I have the article at home, but I'm in Afghanistan at the moment.  And yes my fiddle is setting right beside me! I give lesson each day at 18:00, what you guys call 6:00 pm.

Grandpa is obviously a legend in the family, and his day is long gone but I wondered if anyone might have heard of Harold Lee Nations?

Keith,

Your grand-father passed before Gordon McCann began recording fiddlers, but he may know of him. Also, Drew Beisswenger, the head of the music library at Missouri State University, at Springfield, might know of him. They might possibly even have recordings. And finally, check with Howard Marshall. Here's his FHO home-page: fiddlehangout.com/my/timberhill

You've probably seen this already, but . . . .
