Ozark tunes

From storyteller on 6/28/2011 10:21:27 AM

I've been watching this group since it formed but must admit it wouldn't know an Ozark fiddle tune if it slapped me in the face.

I've been playing for a little over a year now and working with traditional OT or anything that strikes my fancy when I hear it.

Aside from searching the FH site for "Ozark", Is there a source or place on this site or other site that you could point to as "traditional Ozark" fiddle music?

Others will be able to answer the question in depth but I can tell you that 3-CD set called "Traditional Fiddle Music of the Ozarks" got me hooked on Ozark fiddle tunes. amazon.com/Traditional-Fiddle-...00000JMCG

Some tunes, of course, were more widely known, their being played in many regions, while other tunes were not. This would be true of every regional tune. It might be that a particular tune stayed remembered in one region, while died out in another. So, those still remembered in the Ozarks, and not in other areas, might be said to be Ozark tunes, but may, or may not have originated here.

The fiddling itself is another matter. Besides the excellent suggestion Ajisai made of the CDs, any of the tunes on my home-page that were played by Os Scholes, or Sam Younger, and the fiddle-sticks recording, are all examples of traditional Ozark fiddling in the lower Ozarks. All these fiddlers were raised in that, and were dance-fiddlers. This latter trait may be heard in the way they drive the tune, the way the tune flows, the tempo, the lack of notiness, as well as a few other subtle characteristics.

If you have a particular tune you'd like to hear, let me know, and I'll post it, if I have it.

This is the website that got me hooked. The "Ozark Sound" is still elusive to my ears, but it certainly is different than the Texas or Alabama fiddling I've heard. What do I know?
