Howdy!

From M-D on 1/28/2011 12:08:04 PM

Hey, glad to see some interest. [:)] I dont have any topics in mind, at the moment, but feel free to opine, ask questions, etc.

As an early heads-up, the 49th Annual Arkansas Folk Festival will be in Mountain View, Arkansas on 15 - 17 April.

If any want to attend, make plans now. It most often is difficult to find a place to stay, in town.

I know I'm looking forward to it, and I'd bet Fiddler is too. [:D]

I am interested in learning about Ozark fiddle music as a style and learn some of the important tunes. Is it different than old time or just a different approach to old time?

I'd say it was a different approach, though certainly there are tunes that are native to the Ozarks. By the same token, there are a lot of tunes that are commonly heard in many regions. Some tunes just seem to travel well.

Drew Beisswennger and Gordon McCann's book "Ozark Fiddle Music" has 305 tunes in it, with a CD included. I think one learns more from the hearing of it, but it's useful to have explanations, as well. There is a tremendous amount of variety in Ozark fiddling, and there is no one style of that, as it differs from areas in the Ozarks, as well as from fiddler to fiddler. Still, there are some distinctions that one hears that readily marks a fiddler as being Ozark. No way to go into explanations on that, though I have a friend who wrote her Master's Thesis on Ozark Fiddling, and offers more explanation of it than any other single source. I will have that posted on the OT web-site at some point, along with the DVD she made to accompany it.

Being as how my fiddling is influenced by the fiddlers in the lower Ozarks, I tend toward that sound. Primarily it was dance music, though there were tunes that were "listening pieces". One could still dance to them, I suppose, but they're different enough that they weren't used for this.

The best way, to my thinking, is to listen to a lot of Ozark fiddlers, and listen for the nuances. I dont mean bowing patterns, but how the music is being effected. There are discernible qualities which mark the music. Eventually I will post a lot of old music on the OT site, too.

Listen to the recordings on my home-page, as most of them are old Ozark fiddlers.

Hope that helps some.

Great choice for a group. Love the Ozark style. I have a bunch of CD's and take a particular fancy to Lonnie Robertson's style

Glad you joined, Stew. Lonnie was a good one, for sure.
