Lost Ozarks Old-Time Music Festival, 14 - 17 May, 2014

From M-D on 4/14/2014 9:39:07 AM

As seen in the Old-Time Herald ad in the most recent Festival edition.

We call it Lost Ozarks for a reason. Play a part in preserving music through the oral/aural tradition of our Ozark ancestors . . . music that would otherwise be lost, and nearly is, if we didn't share it this way.

With that thought, two-day fiddle and banjo workshops will be offered

These will not be your typical "learn new tunes" workshops. While there will be tunes taught, instructors will be demonstrating and discussing stylistic differences that make the music uniquely Ozark, enabling you to stylize your own music.

As to the tunes that will be shared, these will be obscure Ozark tunes, most not known outside their respective area, or family. Some are played out of cross-tuning, AEae, or AEac#. Do not despair if you’ve never played in cross-tuning. It’s quite easy. You do not need an extra fiddle for this. If you have an A-fiddle, bring it. But, if not, then we can work around that. No problem.

Fiddle workshop will be conducted by Judy Warner, who has devoted considerable time to dissecting the Ozark style, having written her Master’s Thesis on the subject. And, Martin-Darrell, who has spent years collecting Ozark recordings and learning from the old-timers. Martin only knows the Ozark style, played in his own unique way.

Banjo workshop will be conducted by Judy Klinkhammer, who learned to play the frailing/clawhammer style from Bookmiller Shannon, one of the Ozark masters, who grew up with it. Emily Phillips will be teaching the tunes, having learned Bookmiller’s style with Judy's help. Emily is most known for playing the fiddle, but is a phenom on any instrument she chooses, in this case, the Ozark banjo.

All of the instructors have performed at the Ozark Folk Center.

Participants will receive handouts, as well as recordings of Ozark musicians -- Os Scholes, Sam Younger, the Reves family, Bookmiller Shannon, among others -- playing the workshop tunes.

Cost of each two-day workshop is $150.00. Pre-registration is encouraged, as is payment, though payment may be made at the beginning of the workshop. We want to make this easy for people.

Registration available at:

There will also be a free mini-workshop on alternate rhythm instruments, such as spoons, fiddle sticks, gourds, etc., and another free mini-workshop on Ozark jig-dancing.

Free jamming, open to the public, on the 16th and 17th, with live performances of old-time music, too!
