O'Neill's 1001

From nancymae on 8/5/2011 8:27:58 AM

Hello everyone!

I just purchased the above book and I'm very excited to received it!  Does anyone else have this book?  If so, how do use it?  I'm a beginner on learning Irish Trad on the fiddle and am anxious to get started.  I can do a cut and will shortly learn slides and try rolls.  I am learning out of Matt Cranish's book as well as the one by MelBay.  Would love to know other's insights into their learning styles!

it is considered the bible of irish music. there is a different version, containing 1850 tunes. i dont use it for learning tunes. i'd use it for tune learning if i needed an unusal tune that no one else played, like in a gig and competition situation. i use it mostly as a refrence for names of tunes.
Matt's book is fairly good, as is pete's. i dont know about matt, but i know pete and he is a good teacher and does a lot of teaching by ear.
i think it is all in the listening. the more your ear and brain gets used to how the music sounds, you can make connections with what you have learned and what you have listened to.

Thanks mmatt! I received the book on Monday--it's got tiny writing, so I will probably blow up the songs I want to learn. I do listen to alot of Irish Trad...Marc Gunn's podcast, Copperplate, plus I have alot of cd's. Hopefully one day I will be able to play them!! Thank you for your comment!

Hi Nancy, I to have the 1001 tune book, but I think it is kinda hard to read. I bought it for the daughter but she never liked to play out of it. She said that it's to hard to site read when playing out.
We use "The Fiddlers Fakebook" quit a lot. I also search for music on the internet, and I find different muscians that have post there sheet music which I then can download the .pdf files. . .If you like a i could forward a link or two. . .
you could also go to sessions to look up some music there if you know what you are looking for.
here is the link thesession.org/tunes/index.php
Funny you should mention Marc Gunn, I'm just listening to his podcast as I am typing this. One of the older issues#89. I savor these especially as I drive to and from my service calls from the Milwaukee area to points north and west into Minn. and south to Indiana. Currently traveled to Two Harbors minn. for work. A lot of windshield time lets me listen to Marc's podcast all the time. One of the things I like is he always plays traditional instrumentals as the first tune, a nice way to start the program.

Hey...neighbor!! I used to live in Milwaukee, now in the northwoods about an hour and a half from Green Bay! I'm going down to Irish Fest next Friday..not bringing my fiddle though...need another year under my belt at least....(yeah, I'm a coward!!). I may bring my whistle though..easier to carry around.

Yes, O'Neill's is a bit hard to read, isn't it...especially for my 58 year old eyes!! I'll just try and work though them. I have the Fiddler's FakeBook as well, so I'm all set! Yes, there are alot of places to get music on the web...I'm familiar with the session.org and have amassed quite a collection with my whistle playing!! I probably didn't "Need" O'Neill's, but it's such a historical book, I had to have it!!!

Have fun listening to Marc Gunn...he is awesome!! I love his Christmas show.! Yep...I've saved all his podcasts and listen at work!

Hope you make it to Irish Fest!

Yes to being at Irish fest, but I am playing my Bodhran at a session at the Lakeside Brewery on Saturday and Sunday that my band Wylde Thyme is leading.
lol I'm only 50 and i can't barely read the book w/out glasses, so your ahead of the game. I have friends that play one of the main stages, It's a group by the name Baal Tinne. They are good, mostly Trad , and they sometime add a twist.

There is a nicely transcribed version of the book on the internet where it is MUCH easier to read the tunes especially for old eyes. It is a free PDF of the book. guitarnut.com/folktablature/on...OfIreland(Book).zip
This page has a transcription of all the O'Neill's books: guitarnut.com/folktablature/on...ndex.html
Hope this is of some use to you.

Mark
