Do any of you have the two DVD set on Irish Fiddling by Kevin Burke? I've seen it advertised in the Johnson Strings Catalog, and I'm curious. It's about $50, so I'd love to hear what you think of the teaching and what is covered. Thanks!

I own the 2 DVD set of Kevin Burke... His teaching style is a bit dry, but if you really like the way he plays (I do) there are lots of close ups of his hands and he talks a great deal about how to get his sound. If it were only as easy as he makes it look. Anyway there is a fair amount on bowing how to play the different embellishments on the fiddle. For someone just starting out playing a fiddle, I wouldn't recommend it since he doesn't go over how to hold the bow or fiddle nor how to find note pitches, but if you can do even relatively basic bow and fiddle work, he goes slow enough. The first several tunes are quite easy, with a minimum of string changes, each tune building on the last.
Each viewing I catch some nuance of his playing or understand his instruction with a bit more depth. Well worth going over and over and over again.
Bottom line, if not a beginner on the fiddle, well worth it if you want to play Kevin Burke's way. (I do)

Hey thanks. That's the kind of info/opinion I was looking for. I really like the way he plays. For instance, I learned Pigeon On The Gate from Paul McNevin's book/cd, which I like. But, then I found Kevin's version on You Tube, so now with the basic tune and a few ornaments under my belt, I'm trying to get a little tiny bit more of Kevin's sound, rhythm, etc. So, sounds like I would like the DVD set. Thanks again.

I really like the first DVD, I haven't got the second one yet... I found it very, very helpful. I've learned a lot from it about bowing by many repeated watchings. I've been using my lap top and headphones into my electric violin and playing along with the DVD a LOT lately. I'll eventually get volume 2. I bought his six cd set with book from homespun years ago (I have it on cassette!) , but wasn't ready for it at the time, and so put it away. I'm thinking of biting the bullet and re-buying it on CD and trying it again now that I have his DVD under my belt a little.

If you want a sense of what is kind of on the first DVD, there are parts of several lessons on You Tube youtu.be/76SnXKveZ00 this will link to homespun's edit of the first DVD.

So, Bart...did you get the DVD set? Does it come with a music book? If you purchase them separately, it says that there is a music book, but not together? I'm looking at Homespun Tapes. Thanks!

I have both vids, well worth the money. I watch them all the time and every time I watch I learn a new trick.

Well, I finally got around to ordering these DVDs, both 1 and 2. The only "book" that came with each of them was a little stapled paper booklet, inside the DVD case, with some limited sheet music for the tunes. For me, the DVDs are the important items here. His style is actually hilarious to me. He seems understated and embarrassed to be talking. But, the concentrated video of his playing, with the close-ups, and his comments, are wonderful. I do wish he did more intense teaching, but the recordings are really clear, and there are good close-ups. Glad I got them. Merry Christmas to me. :-)
