Advice for new fiddler

From swamp on 12/3/2013 4:50:12 PM

Hello,

I want to learn how to play the cajun fiddle but I live in a small town in the mountains where it is hard to find a teacher. Can anyone recommend a way to get started (books, videos, Skype lessons, etc.)? I would like to attend a camp to learn from a real person but those don't start until the summer it looks like. I do own a fiddle and a tuner!

Thanks for any pointers you can give. And thanks for letting me join the group!

Sue

hello Sue, welcome to the group Cajun Fiddlers. Im sorry no one has responded to your comments.

I could help you get started on skype, although my availability isnt exactly all that great being in graduate school etc. If we can link up thatd be cool

There are however, a plethora of good youtube videos about cajun fiddling exist
here is a channel that is good

youtube.com/user/CajunFiddleLessons

if you go on my youtube channel (same username as this group) there is alot of good fiddling videos under my favorites.

Homespun productions has lessons videos and books available for cajun fiddling by Michael Doucet.

Then there is Ann Savoys Book Cajun Music: A Reflection of a People and Raymond Francois' Ye Yaille Chere (loving called the yellow book by many enthusiasts). Raymonds is good for some because it has the music transcribed into classical notation.

Mtich Reed, a member of this group and very talented musician, also has several cajun fiddle instructional dvds that are great for all skill levels. There are also videos by the late and great Hadley Castille, and Tina Pelione. Tina's is excellent as well. These dvds are widely available.

Then theres the old fashioned way. Listen to the music or a particular song until you can whistle it from memory in the right rhythm and pick up your instrument and figure it out.

Hope this helps!!
