I'm working on Allons a Lafayette (Harry Choates version). Valse a Pop is a great tune, I might try that next. Faren Serrette has a pretty version on his CD.

I had that CD, but somehow it is no longer on my external hard drive, or on my computer.... don't know what happened to it. Sucks cause it was hard to track down. Good player that Farren

Good version of Allons a lafayette! I learned the same one, but by proxy through Michael Doucet

When I pick a cajun tune to learn and start to research it I am finding some pretty diverse versions.
Allons a Lafayette from the Micheal Doucet DVD seems quite a bit different from most of the other ones I run into. Is it two different tunes with the same name?

No, not in my experience but it very well maybe a different key that is not relative. E.g., alot of accordion players will play the song in C, when in fact the original recordings have all been in G. So that might through you off a bit. Also, the Michael Doucet's version is a mix of Harry Choates and other swing style fiddlers who recorded it back in the 30s, so it definitely has the Texas swing feel, and makes it sound not as "Cajun" as accordion based versions.

I think that since Allons à Lafayette was the first Cajun tune ever recorded it doesn't have the same obscurity with names as other Cajun tunes. People usually play the tune by that name in my experience.

The swing era of Cajun music in the late 20s and through the 30s was a very interesting time in Cajun music. If you ever get a chance you should listen to it. There is some really good stuff there. check this link out for a preview.

also there is an anthology album available through a British label called Authentic Cajun & Rare: (insert date 1920s-1930s) They have a ton of the old swing records on the anthology.

Thanks go to Neal Pomea who has spent countless hours finding this music and making it public for enthusiasts like ourselves.
