Hey guys - so, my dad came of age around 1943 or so.
So, wartime, no dad, and poor, yet built a violin.
He lived on Whitetop, and worked with Albert Nash on his own violin, that became my orchestra instrument. I can remember visiting Albert's house when small.

So, 83 years later - it needs some touch-up, etc.
Allowing for lack of 'commercial' supplies, anyone have a good first guess what the finish may be? It is an light amber, blond finish, open neck and rosewood fingerboard and store bought trim (maybe late for my use).

Anyone?

I’ve come across a few makers who learned from Albert Hash. A few years ago there was a maker who brought Hash’s original plate duplicating machine (the basis for the Gemini) and demonstrated how it was used to carve out parts. Hash was an inspiration for a number of makers in Southwestern Virginia and is still fondly remembered there now. There are a few LPs of him playing on display at Barr’s Fiddle Shop in Galax. I believe the owner was a later student of Hash as well. When I visited his shop he showed me one of his own violins and pointed out some of the elements he’d been taught.

Are you hoping to get your violin back into playing shape again? Do you want to just fix it up enough for display? If you can provide some pictures, it’ll be easier to get a rough idea of some of the things it’ll need.

I’d be glad to see some pictures of your violin. It’s great to have a family heirloom like that.
