Been trying to find others in my area for quite a while, and I've put the word in Facebook groups as well.
My dilemma: I've been trying, and re-trying, to teach myself old time fiddle for a number of years. Always starting, stopping and re-starting. Recently I decided to get out of my comfort zone and attend a jam in St Louis. It was great, although I was a bundle of nerves at first. Problem is it is a 2 hour drive (I'm in Pulaski County). In fact, ALL the known (to me) jams are a 1.5-2 hr drive, usually on a worknight, which includes Springfield area, McClurg, St Louis and Columbia....and I'm smack dab in the middle, in a fiddling DEADZONE it seems.
I'm gonna try one in Ozark this Friday, being that it is slightly less of a drive. But, as gas is getting out of hand this may me short lived as well.
It really sucks, because I really enjoy playing with others.
So, now I'm putting the question out here: Does anyone know of any open old time jams closer to my area, or of any players in this area, who might be willing to get together somewhere in the area?
Surrounding counties are: Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Pulaski, Wright, Texas
From the menu at the upper left of this page, if you select "More" and then "Member Homepages" you can use the "Advanced Search" to search by state, city and other terms. It looks like there are currently 349 members from Missouri, not all with the exact city listed. If some are near you, you can probably contact them by the private message feature of the site, and see if they'd be interested in getting together (many people list their interests here too), and start your own jam.
Good luck.
I am meeting some friends in Mt View to play tunes on Thursday evening and Friday.
There is always "jams" at the "Pickin Park" - usually every night and during the day on the weekends. But don't expect those to be old time - it will be a mixture of bluegrass, country, or americana (4 pavilions, and a number of picnic tables)
But from what I am told - they have started a regular OT "slow - jam" on Thursday nights at the park. I'm not real exicted about a slow jam, but my friends are good musicians - we may find a corner somewhere to play.
And - a lot of times there will be folks playing on the porch or in the front yard of the Music Store.
Weekends will usually always have music (concert) on the Courthouse Square.
And - there is usually a jam of sorts (by inivitation) in the parlor of "The Inn at Mt. View) (B&B) - next door to the Pickin Park.
All of this is within an EASY walking distance of each other. And the folks are friendly. Mt View is just a few miles south of the MO border - close to Norfolk Lake and Blanchard Springs Caverns.
