if you need frets play a mando, at least you can have a look at them on a mandolin. The patterns have to be in your head for a fiddle imo, and even then they need to be adjusted by ear.

True, but they're still patterns so you can look down and see the basic finger relationships. It's just the fine tuning that needs to be done by you.
you'd be better off looking at the sounding point of the bow, than trying to imagine where your first finger was when you had your pinky or 2nd or 3rd finger down, you cant see them. Imo no point trying to look at my left hand fingers, just got to try to visualize them in my head and listen.
