I grew up hearing these cranes and always enjoyed watching and listening to them when I lived in Lexington, NE. They're very rare here in north central Wyoming.
Awesome! We made a pilgrimage to the Platte many years ago, but could only watch them from a distance. Last spring, we spotted a pair in the ditch in eastern Michigan, and they are amazingly large birds! Probably the reality behind the legendary Jersey Devil.
In central Florida we see them frequently. We hear their distinctive warbling call well before we can see them flying way up in the sky. Pairs are common on golf courses and other open spaces. Up close they are surprisingly tall. Great looking birds with a red patch on top of their heads.
Linda and I feed and enjoy watching birds. One year a sandhill crane unexpectedly showed up near our house in central PA (photo). One of our serious birder friends explained that sometimes a crane (or a few cranes) will depart from the normal migratory patterns. I used to fish the Snake River in eastern Idaho and have many fond memories of falling asleep or waking up at my camp listening to the cranes bugling.

In our area of Southern Indiana we have a place called Goose Pond where thousands of Sandhill cranes stop to rest. To my surprise the area also bring in thousands of American White Pelicans!!!
