Grafton Wine, one of the sons of Melvin Wine and a good friend, passed away last night, a few days after his 92nd birthday. Grafton played plectrum banjo, along with his brother Denzel (on guitar) on Melvin's first record "Cold Frosty Morning". Grafton also played fiddle and guitar. The photo was taken in the early 1990s during the West Virginia State Folk Festival in Glenville, WV.

I'm really sorry to hear this, Carl. I haven't seen Grafton since Melvin died, quite some years ago now. Maxine and I often saw him when we visited Melvin, many times over the years, and also when Grafton would bring Melvin to Clifftop. For some reason, I was just thinking about Grafton a few weeks ago, and wondering if he was still with us; I guess he was at the time, bit sadly, no longer. I'm thinking you probably knew him fairly well.

Thanks for posting this Carl. I'm sorry to hear it. I didn't really know Grafton, or Melvin either, but here's a photo I had found of them playing in the upstairs lobby at Appalshop, along with my friend Rich Kirby. I'm not sure who's playing banjo - maybe Ron Mullenax?

I read that Grafton Wine was born on August 13, 1934 and died on August 19, 2025 on Facebook. That was a few days after his 91st birthday.

It does look like it might be Ron Mullinex (sp?) on the banjo. Is that you in the upper right?

Yes, I agree that it's Ron but the upper right is Doug.

Sorry, I was busy speeding the plow. As I said in my caption when I first posted that photo here, like Old Dan Tucker I'm "just standin' there lookin'."
