Reviving this thread.... I'm in a mixolydian mood lately, so I'm working on polishing up some of that endless list of Dmix reels and jigs:
The Old Bush
I Buried My Wife and Danced on Her Grave
The Frieze Britches
The Humours of Ballyloughlin
Farewell to Connaught
The Gooseberry Bush
Old Hag You Have Killed Me
(There's no accounting for some of these tune names)
What are some of your favorite Dmix tunes?
Whoa Jon, I literally just sat down after playing Old Bush/Spike Island Lasses!
At our (free) gig last week I led “buried my wife/ byrne’s favorite / morrison’s”, it seemed to go over well :-)
Love all your tunes … I haven’t learned Frieze Britches yet but heard it played beautifully on mando, which made me put it on my list!
Still working on Farewell to Ireland. next fiddle lesson is Monday night and I feel fairly ready, although I still forget a few notes here and there.
I am not good at key ID, but the new guitar player wants us to start shouting out keys…so I guess I will need to learn!!
That’s my update I guess. :-)
At this point I can manage to shout a single syllable, no more. So "D-mixolydian" would be beyond me...the guitar player just has to figure it out!
Spike Island Lasses - that's a powerful tune, one of my favorites, but I haven't mastered it yet.
Here is my favorite recordings of it though, with Yvonne Casey
@Farmerjones, nice rhythms & fiddlin, makes me wanna jam with you! New moody artistic black & white camera work too.
This thread somehow makes people less shy than on the SoundOff forum…I like it!
@Jon, A lovely version! I like her reel after Spike Island a lot too… might have to take on that one…:-)
I was teasing a buddy at the jam. He had a gig and he was down from a 5 piece to a trio, for reasons of scheduling. Well, he called my bluff and dumped a 30 tune set list on me last night. There's a handful of original tunes with no examples. (Zat cuz they're so great?) I've got a week. I'm not worried, now. If I don't get time to familiarize, I'll be disappointed. But it looks like a good percentage are familiar standards.
@Farmerjones, I guess we know “what tunes you’ll be playing lately”!
Can he send recordings of the originals?
(Also are they really gonna play all 30? Maybe just 2-3 of the ‘originals’ will get played…which is manageable to learn in a week…)
Have a fun gig!
Last set played here: Monaghan Twig / Eel in the Sink (kind of weird set, yes I know :-)
