Well, I've heard I lot about busking and I ain't ever tried it. One day this week I tried it. I went to town and that where the night mare begins. I found what I think is a nice little place on the corner and set myself up. Just me and my fiddle and a chair. I'm thinking...jeez is this going to work..I've never done this before. I got settled and started playing and a person threw her chewing gum at me. I'm mad...so I picked it up and threw it back. I'm playing some good stuff and did it matter of what I played...it didn't. I was looking out my right eye and I noticed this lady just staring at me...she just stared at me. So I turned to her and said....Is there some you would like to hear because I'm out of hear if there aint. He said no..I just like to hear you play and she have me a $100 bill...no bull. She asked haven't I seen you before..I said maybe...She asked me where I play...I told her where I play...and she gave me another $100. She said, Jerry are you ready to come home now...the chickens need to be feed...so I went home. Jerry

Jerry, buddy, Don't even ASK her how she got that money.. As an aside, my new busking partner, Corn Johnson has made me a fortune lately.. This week I totaled over $150 in tips.. It would have been more but it started to rain today..People love him and actually come Looking for him... I'm now making his son as another busker...On a more serious note,.... Some people don't appreciate the value that buskers add to a community..Me and other buskers are trying to change that..

You should make his buddy, Asparagus Annie, who plays the banjo, for when you have company.

I'm glad you are Lee, You know I never did busking. I read on the internet I think it was facebook. That John Duncan was doing busking. John is a tremendous player and yet he busks. I say the more the merrier. What goes around comes around...got another one but I forget. Live happy and play thats it. Anyway glad to hear.

Around my town seems that they only like rock and roll. If I were to take my fiddle out I'm afraid they would just stone me. Now I have no problems getting stoned...but not like that. Jerry

I was playing today at home and my neighbor came by and asked me. I'll give you $2 bucks to stop.

Some people just don't understand how much time we put into all this stuff. But anyway...I took his 2 dollars....and I continued playing..I thought that other neighbors would come by and ask me the same thing. Nothing yet but I think if I continue...I might make a few bucks this week. Jerry

This is my latest busking story.. There was a festival downtown today with an anticipated 10,000 people attending. My daughter has a booth selling coffee, and my son was hired to put up lights and decorative lanterns.. I helped both of them..After they were both set up I went out to the street to busk.  Tips were coming in strong and the fiddling  puppet drew good crowds of kids and adults alike.  After about an hour a plain clothes policeman came up to me and said that I was in violation of law by busking within two blocks of an 'event'.  I left for home.. When I got home my brain started churning.. What Law?? I've been busking around events for a long time and was never asked to leave before...Finally, I went back to the festival and strolled around until I saw that same guy.. I approached him and asked for clarification...ie, let me see your badge.  He displayed it and we had a nice chat.  He offered to send me via email the code that I had violated... Live and learn I always say...

While I was looking up busking code, I couldn't help but to see that in most instances, they are tied in with PANHANDLING.. The Supreme Court has determined that there is a definite difference but narrow minded people still seem to think of busking as some sort of begging... (ticks me off)... What do YOU think?

Lee,

(I am not a lawyer disclaimer) My understanding of case law regarding busking is that municipalities often have antediluvian (25 cents, please) ordinances about BOTH busking and panhandling. It can and has cost those municipalities dearly. The ACLU represented one "Johnny Bones" in a case versus the city of Tombstone AZ. The city lost, big time. There are also other cases involving larger cities...I think that Seattle was one that paid out their nose. The cities may "reasonably" (whatever that means) regulate the practice, but may NOT forbid it. I suspect the reasonable regulation would be things like location at an "event" to control proximity to other buskers, times that busking was allowed, general behavior by buskers, etc.

I have been a cop, and it sounds to me like your fellow was overreaching a little. Typically you wouldn't be rousted unless there was a complaint. It's possible that's what happened, ( I have heard you play, remember)but it sounds to me as though your boy was just too full of his own importance. I would speak to my local city council person and suggest specific changes to the ordinance backed up with examples of case law from the internet.

Wayne, someone probably DID complain.. I was set up right outside the entrance to the event.. They had a no charge entrance but were looking for donations.. Nobody was donating  except to me..I understood....

Today a honkey-tonk piano player friend of mine watched my fiddle playing marionette play for  a while and asked if I could make one that played a piano.. I said, "Sure,$100."  He hesitated.. I said, "Listen, I just made $25 in the past 30 minutes. You are an amazing piano player..$100 will come by quickly."  So far I've sold two of these guys..Maybe there is a future in this.

Labor Day Weekend.. perfect weather, lots of parents with kids at the local Farmer's Market..record numbers. I took this guy, Busker Rabbit, busking three hours ..I made a dollar a minute.. do the math...That is not likely to happen again but I can hope...I have switched to invisible thread which makes it harder for people to see the bowing process.

I'm working on a little magic act where Busker Rabbit pulls an animal out of a hat... That may take some time..I'll use my foot to pull a piece of invisible thread attached to the animal in the hat.. Not sure yet how I'll tie it into the rabbit..

Funny. The place that I busk in front of in a to-be-unnamed- town is managed by a lady who, to me, looks like and acts like Selina Cadell, who plays the Pharmacist, Sally Tishall, in the TV series Doc Martin..I think I'll buy her a neck brace... What is a tactful way to present it to her?

The city of Bloomington has recently, on one street in particular, has posted signs that say, "Don't contribute to Panhandlers"..or somthin' like that.. Frankly, I don't approve of the panhandlers but I DO think that for the city to put out such signs is unconstitutional... It might be better for signs to say "support "homeless" programs".. ANYWAY.. buskers have to obey the Same ordinances that panhandlers must obey.. To distinguish myself from them ( I am a "street performer'') I made a 12x12 sign that said, Please Support Street Entertainers... I placed it on the sidewalk about 40 feet from where I was performing.. Two people tripped over it, one person ran over it with a baby buggy and (I watched), Nobody looked down to read it...So much for that.........The next time YOU see a street performer, GIVE A TIP.. It is a lot of work.. I've noticed that only about 1% of passersby tip, while a good 50% smile... We have to change that..

Dang I'm going to cry. I agree with Lee support the street performers because it might be me someday.

Instead of giving him chump change give him something other...like a hundred dollar bill..that way when he gets home to the shack he maid from dis garded things. He can show to his loved one or other...how much he made tonight...just working the street's.

I am sorry that you had to go.. from corner to corner and no one just to appreciation your music...thats said.

Remember, You owe me a percent on every thing you made...even the blowup dolls Jerry.

Well, Jerry, the homeless seem to have outdone the City.  Today I saw 4 homeless people holding up signs right under the City's prohibition suggestion signs..  So, either the homeless can't read  or the passersby can't read.  Either way, I made about as much money busking today as I did before they put up the sign.

Tomorrow I'll go to the Farmer's Market where Big dollars are guaranteed.. and I've added to my busking act a little Magic.. I bought some Magician's Invisible Thread.. (really, thinner than a hair), that I can only see if I hold it in front of a piece of white paper very close to me.. I've attached a red chili pepper to on end and put the pepper in a little hat.. when the kids wiggle their fingers I'll pull on the thread and  the pepper will "magically" rise up out of the hat...

Oh, what I won't do for attention......
