What tunes you playing today
Joe Birchfield and probably Steve Tucker, fiddles; me, banjo; April O'Dell, dancing. Recorded at Joe and Ethel's house while we were producing the first Roan Mountain Hilltoppers LP.

this is a treasure, doug- thanks so much.
i don't have that recording, just bits and pieces i've picked up.
harold hausenfluck was the first person around here to go totally crazy about the Birchfields: you could not talk with him for 5 minutes without joe's name coming up.

Michael, glad you liked it. This is from a cassette I recorded mostly to hear from Joe about his life and the how he learned specific tunes. It was not intended for release, but somewhere along the line we all started playing some tunes, and I think this one's pretty good. This was February 27, 1982 - at other places you can hear the grandkids throwing snowballs at the house, and we talk about busting up some more firewood.

harold's living in a nursing care facility here in richmond (stroke a few years back) but we still see him at least once a month for The Harold Jam- he's able to play harmonica for the full jam, now.
i reckon to see him perk up for a month when he hears these recordings!

"...ugliest man I've ever seen's / a man called John from Bowling Green / no hat on his head no shoes on his feet / always lookin' for something to eat
Lost John/we call him Lost John..."
Good stuff! Jim Gaskin used to do that one alot.
