This is my first ever recording. I have been playing one year and 3 months now. I bought a 8 dollar flee market microphone and used audacity, of which I really didnt know how to use, LOL Anyway, this is my attempt at Angeline the Baker and boy was I nervous just because there was a mic on!

You're doing just fine! I heard some bowing variations from one round to the next, very good!

One sugegestion-- you go from playing no drones in the first round or two, to playing almost the whole tune with 'em. It sounds sort of abrupt. Maybe start to add them in in a "mix it up" way. For instance, the first two notes of the tune played singly, then the third long note played with a drone, next few quick notes played singly, then the long one after played with a drone. Actually you can do that with any tune. Play the notes with a longer duration with a drone while playing the faster notes between 'em without drones.

There's guitar backup on this site that you can play along with, did you know that?

Getting used to playing with the backup track will make it easier for you at the jams. And if you have earphones you can be listening to the backup track while recording your fiddling without it. :-)

...coming right along on a tough choice of instrument. Looks like bj has offered a lot! I hope you don't mind if I take some of the suggestions myself :) & boy howdy can that mic make you nervous! Keep up the good work.

Try listening to the backup track using Windows Media Player. You can slow it down by clicking the little arrow under "Now Playing" then choosing "enhancements" and "show enhancement" and choose "play speed settings". This will work for mp3 files, which are the format those backup tracks come in.

Meanwhile, use audacity or whatever program you use to record. I think if you use two different programs, one for the listening, and one for the recording, it'll sort things out.

Brya...for a year and 3 months under your fiddle....I think you did a great job. You added all sorts of different bowings and dressed it up to boot. At a year I wasn't adding anything..I just played it all very simple. Thumbs Up to You!!!

Good job, Brya. It's about time you put something up. We've all been waiting. Keep them coming. If I might make one suggestion, It was either the mike, or you had the level up too high and were distorting on the double stops. Next time, get a level first and watch the meter to see if you're overdriving the input. I look forward to hearing your next one.

Thanks mudbug, I really have never recorded so I really stunk at it. I tried several times with background music but it echoed, so then I just tried without the background music. It might also be my cheap mic I bought.

Quite good tone which indicates good left hand form. The metronome suggestion may be a good idea. One thing I do is record myself playing chords on a guitar (or banjo accompaniment) and use that as my metronome. Also singing to yourself while you play helps you keep time as well as takes your mind off the bowing arm (which will "loosen" your bowing.)

Hey man. ON audacity theres a setting to whether the recording mic is fed back through the monitor. Turn that off. There is lag time in the digital processing. And after you record you may to slide the track with slider tool to line in up with the first track.

I thought that sounded great Rob! I heard a good tone and the bowing was right on after you got into the tune. The variations were good too!
