This is really June Apple. Lady of the Lake may be a regional, alternate title, I reckon. There seems to be a smattering of tunes that go by the name Lady of Lake _____, or Lady of the Lake. Chirps Smith wrote one called Lady of Lake May.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say that I like your version (I'm so distractable).

It is true that Lady of the Lake is a common title for many different tunes, but all to my knowledge cast in a major key and not at all modal. Also many of the Hillsville, Va (Uncle Norm's home) fiddlers (Abe Horton's is a good example). play June Apple (especially the high strain) in a way that very much resembles this Lady of Lake. To boot I have collected most (maybe all) of the Norman Edmonds recordings known to exist and as far as I can tell he did not record June Apple. Maybe Uncle Norm's Lady of the Lake is an earlier version of June Apple. But I have to say that I resist lumping tune families together too quickly. To my ear Uncle Norm's tune is really quite different than most versions of June Apple. In fact it reminds me more of a West Virginia tune like Henry Reed's Cold Frosty Morning or Ducks on the Pond or Pappy Taylor's Devil in the Hay Stack. But thanks for the compliment and I am glad you liked it.

This is nearly the same as Henry Reeds Ducks on a pond. The titles are even related. A Martinsville fiddler played this too, as did Parley Parsons from Galax, ans his sounds even more like Henry Reeds. Henry called it an East Virginia tune. Nobody played it in modal around Glen Lyn Va. either, it was straight A. Its a good tune.

Thanks for the comment. You wouldn't have a recording of Parley Parson's version, would you. I guess this is a little like picking up a lady in a bar. Interested in trading field recordings?
