This is a recording of the All Volunteer String Band at a barn dance band Saturday evening, November 15, 2008. This version is straight out of the compendium of old time songs and fiddle tunes, Dear Old Illinois. It was supposed to be the fourth tune in a medley of 'A' tunes, but we only needed three for the corresponding dance, so we did this one as an instrumental. The crowd was enthusiastic and you can hear clapping and some hoots and hollers.

Hi Michael,
Very nice job on a classic Illinois tune. I learned this tune off the Dave Landreth CD and the Indian Creek Delta Boys CD, but can't play it up to speed like your group did. Who is (are) the fiddler(s)?
Hope to see you again this season.
Dave

The fiddlers that I remember are: Cathy Jones (of the famous Jones Family of Lombard, Illinois), Bob Smith (a hero of mine for learning to play fiddle at the tender age of 52), and Chuck Maltese (a soft-spoken, nice guy). There is another fellow that trades off between fiddle and clawhammer banjo, and I don't know which he played on that tune. I was the bassist. There were many other musicians playing banjo, guitar, maybe an autoharp, one squeeze box of some variety (he has at least three very different ones), and a hammered dulcimer.
