Glad ya like it, ODL. Ancient song, heard it/learned it from many sources, mississippi john hurt, donovan, general universal-telepathic human knowledge base...until i cant even tell where the sources leave off and my sense of the lyrics and tune begin....when i sing it it's like this:...candy man been and gone/candy man his name was john/candy man been and gone/do anything in this god almighty world just to bring my candy man home/there's a little green light/there's little red light/stop on the red/go on the green/look out for in-between/run pitch a penny pitch candy man/took my baby to the candy man stand/baby got hung on the candy man/hey hey spent all my dough/ran barefoot home in the snow...is it a song about dealers? pimps? salvation? fall from grace? confectioners? jesus? john the baptist? can't serve two masters? all of the above or none of the above? whatever, it remains wonderful and mysterious especially the recurring urchin-cry of 'run pitch a penny pitch candy man.' And IMO a dang good song to turn into a fiddle tune.
