I understand that this was collected from a fiddler in Litchfield, IL. I first heard it played by Art Lange and Chris Ptasnik at Gebhart Woods Dulcimer Festival in 2006. Since then we have played it a few times in the bi-weekly jam we have here in Springfield. It sounds like a polka to me.

Well, this is my second time trying to learn, so there is about a year or so that I tried perhaps 20 years ago.
It is a good tune, and it's kind of awkward on the banjo compared to the fiddle.

Oh, yeah - it's a polka! We like to play it when someone calls the Patty-Cake Polka dance.
(heel, toe, heel, toe, slide, slide, slide slide
heel, toe, heel, toe, slide, slide, slide, slide
right, right, right, left, left, left
both, both, both, knees, knees, knees
and then it's on to the next person in the circle)

John Short's was originally collected by members of the Allen Street String Band from a fellow named Ivan Dodge. He lived around the Springfield area. I believe that Howard Sims from Modesto, IL playe dit too.
When looking through a history of Jefferson County IL one day I noticed an article about the John W. Short Family. That coaught my eye so i read it. It turns out that John W. Short was a fiddler and the article sayed that he loved to play at every occassion. So, perhaps John W. Short from Mt. Vernon, IL is the source for this tune.
