Writen in 1858, this lovely Civil War era ballad was a favorite of the men of both armies. It's sentimental lyrics and huanting melody were sung around many a campfire by the homesick boys of that great and tragic conflict. Played on fiddle, parlor guitar and minstral banjo.

Tim,
Thanks very much for putting this version up...
I've been wanting to learn this tune and have been looking for a good, "authentic" sounding version to learn. This is exactly what I've been looking for.
And, BTW, it's very well done...

It's dark, the boys have been fed. A few are gathered on the smokey side of the fire so as not to bother the others with the pipe smoke. One fella is smoking cigar he got up north. There's a couple of brothers playing cards up close to the fire where they can see. Another fella next to them writing a letter. Tim and his friends are playing a tune I kind of recognize. Makes me think of home.
