The fiddler is Gil Kiesecker and his CD is called Blue Mountain Memories. I'd like to find out how, at the very end of this phrase, he gets that bouncy "boi-oi-oing" sound. Vivian Williams of Voyager Recordings graciously gave me permission to post this clip.

He double-stopped the open A and E strings. He also bore down a little harder for added emphasis/volume.

If you can, have an experienced fiddler show you (while you record it) in slow motion how to combine a bow pulse with a little downward sweep to make that "boi-oi-oing" sound. Rhys Jones taught this in a workshop I was in and he really broke it down well. It was a turning point for me. There's a lot going on there (bow pulse, sweep, and syncopation) and I've been practicing that one little move for almost two years now. Its part of the essence of that old time fiddle sound.

Janet, Sounds to me like he is sliding into the E on the D string before ending the phrase with the open A and open E together.
