From the Fiddler's Companion:
SHANNON WALTZ. Old‑Time, New England, Canadian; Waltz. USA; Texas, New England. F Major (Christeson, Phillips, Silberberg): G Major (Hinds). Standard tuning. AB (Christeson, Hinds, Silberberg): ABB'C (Phillips). Donna Hinds (ne' Hebert) notes that, according to Tim Woodbridge of Hartford, Ct., this tune was originally from Canadian fiddler Don Messer, though the source Woodbridge had it from was from Texas. The story is partly true, for in actuality this is a northern tune which found its way into the repertoire of the 1920's stringband the East Texas Serenaders whose fiddler, D.H. Williams, learned the tune from a northern fiddler of his acquaintance, one Mr. Brigsley. It in any event predates Don Messer whose heyday was the mid-20th century.
