PigAnkle - recorded 1991 - Kirk Hunter- fiddle, David Allen - Banjo, RIchard Chance - Guitar. Learned Pickin' Chickens from a recording of Allen St., as well as from my good friend, Bob Atchison. I learned this unusual version of Grey Eagle from an old timer in Mtn.View during the spring Folk Festival. It is somewhat similar to the transcrition in the Christeson's "Old Time Fiddler's Repertoire." I can't believe 1991 was THAT long ago!!

Nice job. Dwight Lamb calls this "Old Ladies Pickin' Chickens" and, IIRC, that's what the Allen Street Stringband called it, too. Cool version of Grey Eagle, kind of like a lot of them that I've heard over the years (Ward Jarvis', Cyril Stinnet, and Uncle Bob Walters, among others). I much enjoyed them.

I know that I get the name wrong and can't remember it from day to day. Thanks for the correction. However, "Pickin" .."Peckin'" and were Ladies pickin' them or was it the Old Lady's chicken that was peckin'? Having run about 400 leg (that's 200 head for you city folk) of layin' chickens on our family farm operation in deep East Texas when I was younger, the possessive form makes more sense to me. Also, is "pickin'" the same as cullin"? Or are they pickin' them to wring their neck and deep fat fry them? So, you can see my confusion - but isn't this how the folk process goes??

I thought it was about pickin' (plucking) the feathers off the chickens to make some delicious fried chicken.
