For Sale: Hiroshi Kono Violin, 2019 - $2,600 USD

This is a Hiroshi Kono violin made in 2019. Kono violins are known throughout the country and even abroad as one of the best violin brands available under $5000. They have been endorsed by major players over and over and have often beaten out more expensive violins in trials.

Built on a comfortable and easy to manage Guarneri model, each one is taken apart and given a good bassbar and a check of graduations before receiving varnish in Bethesda. No Kono is labeled until it’s been played to ensure it is of good quality. All Konos have a one-piece back.

This violin has just had a new professional setup by Maxham Violins and has a fresh set of Rondo strings with Goldbrokat E. As has become standard with Konos, it comes with Wittner pegs for convenience. It will be shipped in a lightweight case unless a different option is requested. Bows are available as well, some of which are posted on this marketplace.

For Sale: Thomas Hofto Violin, 1920 - $1,500 USD

This is an American violin made by Thomas L. Hofto of Tacoma, Washington in 1920. The maker learned from a Polish maker named Trognitz in California before setting up shop in 1915. He was a violinist as well and ran a business until his death.

This violin has been played quite a lot and has had a number of repairs. It was taken to The Violin House of Weaver to refurbish it recently, and there cracks were repaired and the original varnish that had been flaking off was replaced. Some previous repairs that were solid but uneven were left as they were. It was played by a jazz player in DC until recently. The string heights are lower than usual, as is the player’s preference. It has been through a lot but it has a rather nice tone. The nut is made of imitation ivory. The instrument represents a piece of Tacoma history and it’s pleasant to play. It fits the bill for a lot of fiddlers—it’s got some scars from a long life of playing and it’s somewhat idiosyncratic, but it has a good voice.

The violin will be packed in a lightweight case for shipping unless a different option is requested. Bows are also available, some of which are listed on the marketplace.

This violin comes with a professional setup by Maxham Violins, including a Wittner tailpiece for convenience and a set of Dominant strings with a Goldbrokat E. It is a powerhouse violin—the kind that just seems to “go” immediately when you touch the bow to the string, and you can lean into it as much as you want.
For Sale: Excellent 1920s French JTL Violin - $5,100 USD

This is a French violin made in Mirecourt in the 1920s in the Jerome Thibouville Lamy workshop. It bears a Gustave Bazin label, although it has been determined by a French expert that it was actually made in the JTL workshop. It was purchased in Paris, then brought to the U.S. The workmanship is very good and the condition is excellent.

It has been professionally set up by Maxham Violins. It comes with a Brazilwood bow, stamped Ary, a black lightweight case, and Gustave Bernardel rosin. Other bows and cases are available at a modest price as well.

This is an excellent old instrument that’s been cared for and played for almost a century. It has the nuance of a fine violin made by master workmen during one of the greatest periods of violin making.

For Sale: Fine Leon Mougenot Violin, 1951 - $10,000 USD

This Mougenot violin is a very fine example of Mirecourt work from a maker who provided instruments to some of the best shops. This one comes from later in his career, but unlike so many of his peers, does not show any loss of proficiency in its execution.

Mougenot had an easily recognizable varnish and antiquing style for the majority of his work, and this violin displays that. For many of his violins, Mougenot used a golden amber, but for this one he added some red in a very tasteful manner.

It has a warm and broad tone that’s quite pleasant. It responds easily but is also forgiving. It has an excellent certificate from Hugues Paumier. The violin will be shipped in a lightweight case unless a different option is requested. Bows are available as well, either by request or through listings on this site.

For Sale: Fine Hermann Todt Violin, 1920 - $7,000 USD

This is a fine instrument that showcases the work of one the best Markneukirchen shops during one of Germany’s greatest eras in making. This particular instrument has been owned and played for years by a jazz violinist in the DC area. All of his violins were chosen for their tone.

It has a solidly repaired crack on the lower bout of the top (not in the soundpost area) but is otherwise free of structural damage. You can see some wear to the varnish from plenty of playing, although a good deal of the look is the antiquing.

It was made in 1920 for the William Lewis shop in Chicago, as stated on the label. It bears the maker’s brand on the back as well. In 2022 it was appraised for $7500 by Fred Oster in Philadelphia. It was set up in the William Harris Lee workshop in Chicago and still has their bridge.

It has a warm and velvety tone and it’s easy to play. It is a player’s instrument just waiting for its next devotee.

For Sale: Hand Varnished Violin - $750 USD

This is one of three violins I bought as practice varnishing violins for a varnishing and varnish making workshop in 2010. It’s most likely a Chinese violin, but it was sold simply as a “varnish practice instrument,” which means it was made with plain wood without much figure (the prettiness of the wood dictates prices in factories). I stripped it after the workshop and revarnished it with a spirit varnish of my own making. It’s all set for a player who wants a good sounding instrument at an economical price. It has rosewood fittings and a professional setup and revoicing by Maxham Violins.

The violin will come in a GEWA Aspirante case unless a different case is desired. Bows are also available in my other listings or upon request.

I have a 1971 ER Pfretzschner violin made in West Germany for sale. It has the solid one piece back. It has the Caspari tuning pegs that hold very well. I never have to touch them. I just adjust the fine tuners every once in awhile. The violin has no cracks. It does have fine scratches that could be gotten out probably with some polish. No deep scratches. It is set up nicely. I think probably more for bluegrass because the action is fairly low. It is a beautiful instrument and it has that old tone to it, not the high pitched noise from cheap fiddles. The violin is structurally solid. Does not come with a bow. Will ship to the lower 48 states. Thanks for looking

For Sale: Fine Violin by Daniel O. Smith, 2012 - $13,000 USD

This is a fine violin made by Daniel O. Smith in 2012. It has a beautiful birdseye maple back with matching ribs and neck. Like all Smith violins, it is made on the Guarneri del Gesu il Cannone pattern. This one is labeled number 55. It also bears handwritten inscriptions inside. The varnish is a beautiful golden amber oil varnish that brings out the beauty of the wood perfectly.

This violin was very special to the maker, considered by him to be his best work for many years, and he kept it hanging in one of his display cabinets for over a decade before deciding he was ready to sell it. It showcases some of his most exquisite work and has more power than any other Smith violin I’ve played.

It has been professionally set up by Maxham Violins. It will be shipped in a lightweight case unless a different model is desired. Bows are also available on this site and by request.

This is a very good example of Japanese violin making from the early 1900s. It was played and cared for lovingly by a woman who received it as a gift in her childhood and spent her lifetime with it before it was sold to a fiddler who in turn sold it to me in Galax over the summer.

As you can see in the pictures, the condition is near perfect, with only a few signs of wear. It still has its original pegs. It has been professionally set up by Maxham Violins and is in fine playing shape, with a quick response and a clear and even tone.
