He's holding the frog end -- you can see the tip up at the other end, together with whatever the heck the rest of that is. I've thought this a strange photo for several years, and don't really know why it' s that way. Just seemed to fit with the forum thread, but that's a guess.

It looks like he added a spacer to the tip end of an otherwise conventional bow, probably to permit the bow hair to be looser without the stick touching the bow hair or hitting the strings.
