Erik.......Thanks. Purchased on eBay, I rebuilt it. This fiddle had an integrated bass bar (carved from the top wood....not glued in) and was in sad shape. I recently detailed the rebuild in the forum titled "my little fiddle sucess story". I sold the fiddle to someone who loves it....so I am happy. The other pics tell most of the story the story. Larry

Excellent work, Larry!
How did you know how to optimize the bass bar? Did you make it oversized, and the shape it to get a desired resonance to the top plate?

Well....I didn't optimize at all. I looked at other bass bars on the web, read about how to shape them (highest part at the bridge), and I used an existing peice of spruce I had leftover from repairing a guitar. That peice was actually shorter than the recommended length by about an inch. But I used it anyway. I saw some variability in bass bar construction, so I figured there was room to vary things. I did fit it very well along the entire length and tapered it length-wise and cross-wise. I used my own mix of hot hide glue. I never tapped except to listen for any looseness or rattles. I might have gotten lucky. How is one to know except by trial and error in some of these things. Thanks for your comment. Larry

Had you thought about putting a short 5th string on the fiddle so you could play it like a banjo? Hmm???? Or, have you thought about putting a curved bridge on your banjo so you can play it like a fiddle???????? Just wondering. (wink)
